American Pit Bull
"The Pit Bull is a dog that loves to please its owner and tries to become whatever kind of dog its owner desires." This quote from Pit Bulls on the Web sums up the history of this breed. Originally bred to bait bulls in England, the ancestors of the Pit Bull were forced to turn to killing rats when bull baiting was banned in 1835. The UKC (United Kennel Club) was formed in 1898, with the expressed purpose of registering the American Pit Bull. Despite what you my hear or read, Pit Bulls are not inherently aggressive towards humans, but as terriers and fighting dogs they should not be trusted with small animals or other dogs. Pitties are strong, agile and love to play tug. (They are not very good at fetching since they are not retrievers). One famous Pit Bull is Pete the Pup from the depression era movie series "Our Gang / The Little Rascals". We can only hope that the breed will be redeemed when humans realize that THEY are the ones who are responsible for creating an ill-tempered dog by allowing idiots to acquire and/or breed them and then mistreat them. Until then, if you are a responsible Pittie owner, perhaps these links will help fight the trend towards the victory of ignorance over facts (The American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT) FAQ and BADRAP). Pit Bulls can be recognized by their stocky build, square jaw, rose ears and short, thin coats. They come in just about all colors. They are typically medium sized, from 35 to 55 lbs, but can be larger or smaller.
