Bullmastiff

The Bullmastiff comes from England and is the result of crossing Bulldogs with Mastiffs. Bullmastiffs of the 19th century had the job of assisting English gamekeepers in catching poachers by chasing them into the forest and holding them down without serious injury. BUllems make excellent guard dogs, since they are mellow unless provoked. They require only minimal grooming, and don't shed, but they are droolers and may snore loudly. They also do not generally live longer than 10 yrs. You may be the one to make sure they get enough exercise, since they will lie around the house or apartment unless you take them out for a romp. They do not make good jogging companions, nor will BUllems amaze anyone in agility competitions. Make sure that your Bullmastiff is kept at room temperature ALL the time (even outside), since they cannot tolerate heat nor cold. Bullmastiffs can be recognized by their powerfuls build, short coats, flat faces with a dark snout, and drop ears. They weigh between 100-140 lbs. Henry weighed weighed 14 lbs at 8 wks, 28 lbs at 3 mos, and 40 lbs at 4 mos. He gained approximately 10 pounds a month until about 9 months, when he weighed 90 lbs. Colors are fawn (like Zeus), red or brindle (like Henry), possibly with a small white spot on the chest and dark ears. Brindles are supposedly usually smaller than their solid color cousins, but you wouldn't know it by Henry.
