Brittany Spaniel

Named for the region of France known as Bretagne, the Brittany is though to be the result of crossing English setters and spaniels in the 1800s. These dogs soon became the favorite bird hunting dogs of French landowners and poachers alike. Brittanys are the smallest pointing retrievers and are still used as gun dogs. Thanks to their friendly, obedient, and playful dispositions, they make excellent family pets. Aside from a good brushing once a week, Brittanys require little grooming. They are active, however and need one hour of hard exercise every day, preferably outdoors. Brittany Spaniels have been called "Brittanys" by the AKC for over 20 years, while the UKC differentiates between "Brittany" and "Epagneul Breton" (literally "Brittany Spaniel") also called a "French Brittany". Brittany Spaniels are medium sized, weighing 30-40 lbs, and can be recognized by their drop ears, stubby tails, and light colored eyes. Colors are black-and-white, orange-and-white, liver-and-white, liver tri-color, and black tricolor. There may be spotting or a roan effect.
