Collie

There probably aren't that many Americans who can't recognize a Collie, thanks to the popularity of "Lassie". Two centuries ago the ancestors of the modern Collie were herding sheep in Scotland. The first Collie was brought to the US somewhat more than a century ago. Collies have a justified reputation for being smart, easy to train, and good-natured dogs. Like any herding dog, they need plenty of off-leash exercise. Collies are medium to large dogs, typically weighing 50-75 lbs, and have long, narrow muzzles and ears that are erect except for the very tip, Collies come in four colors: sable and white (like Lassie and little no name #1), tricolor (like Annie and little no name #2), blue merle, and white, and have can two types of coat: rough (like Lassie and Annie) or smooth (like Malcolm and Smidgen). Some say that the "smooths" are more devilish than the "roughs".
