Great Dane

Ask someone to which breed of dog is the largest, and chances are the answer will be "Great Dane". They can be as large as a young colt, and are otherwise similar to horses in how they carry themselves, their calmness, and the fact that they seldom bark. They also need about the same amount of exercise, preferably off-leash. One of the most famous Great Danes is the cartoon character Scooby Doo. Originally bred to hunt big game in Germany, this breed is still known as the "Deutsche Dogge" (German Dog). Presumably the history of the 20th century caused the dog to be renamed the Great Dane in the US. A variety of colors is possible, including black, blue (like Bruno), fawn (tan with black muzzle), harlequin (white with black or possibly grey patches) and mantle ("tuxedo" on body, black head with white stripe down the face). There is helpful info here on possible coloring in Great Danes. Large Marge is somewhere between a harlequin and a mantle.

Little Scooby (who at two months is already knee-high) is a blue merle. Harley was not named for the motorcycle but for his striking coat. He is a Merle-a-quin, meaning a merle (black spots on grey background) harlequin (large spots), or spots within spots. By the way Harley is being a typical Great Dane by lying on the bed. Their lanky bodies make it painful for them to lie on the floor so make sure you have soft furniture big enough for your big doggy.
