English Shepherd

Contrary to what the name imples, the English Shepherd is an American breed. Descended from farm dogs that early settlers brought with them from England, the English Shepherd has the same ancestors as Collies and Border Collies. However, they will hunt and guard in addition to herding. As a family dog they will need lots of exercise and attention. English Shepherds are athletic and enjoy agility courses, but also have the calm personalities that make for good therapy dogs. English Shepherds have the long coats typical of herding dogs. They are generally medium sized (35-60 lbs) but can weigh as much as 90 lbs. Colors are black-and-tan (like Lady), black-and-white, sable or tri-color.
