American Foxhound

Like many humans in America, the American Foxhound claims a mixture of English, Irish and French ancestry. No less than George Washington had hounds in Virginia which are supposedly the base of many modern Foxhounds. There are several different "strains" of Foxhounds which generally are from various parts of the US. These dogs are fast and good at tracking scents, and bred to hunt in packs, they will generally get along with other dogs, although not necessarily small pets. If you live in an apartment this is probably not the breed for you, unless you plan to walk in the woods for at least one hour a day. If you do, be prepared for your foxhound to take off after an interesting scent. They do not require much grooming. American Foxhounds can be recognized by their musical baying in addition to their spotted coat, slightly curved tail, and drop ears. They are large dogs, weighing 65-75 pounds. Although any color is possible, they are often tri-color (like Curious) or brown-and-white. Marilyn is considered "lemon" to red-and-white and is heavily boned.
