Greyhound

A transportation company made this breed famous by putting a picture of a Greyhound on the sides of their busses. This was not just because of their elegant, streamlined appearance. Greyhounds are the fastest dogs on the planet, reaching top speeds of around 40 mph. Many of them are raced for sport, and then seek good homes after retiring at the age of about 2 yrs. Sensitive and gentle dogs, they make wonderful companions. Be prepared to give them a LOT of exercise, and a long walk won't do it. They need to RUN and run fast. Ironically it is not a good idea to let them off-leash. As sighthounds they will take off after small animals like squirrels and ignore your cries to stop, even if they are running directly in front of a car. Make sure they have a soft place to rest, since a healthy Grey won't have any fat to cushion him/her on a hard floor. Greyhounds have just about the greatest variety of coats of any breed. Solid colors, spotted, or "brindle" (thin black stripes) are all common. Their fur is thin and they have almost no body fat, so make sure they stay warm if they go outdoors when it is cold.
