WHAT KIND OF A DOG IS THAT?

If you have ever been unsure of how to answer that question, this web site is for you. It is intended as a resource for anyone who owns or wants to own a mixed breed dog, and also for shelters who do their best to identify mystery dogs. Unlike purebred owners, we sometimes do not know what our dog is, which makes it harder to care for the dog. How much should we be feeding our puppies? What diseases should we be on the lookout for? All this is easier when we have a little more knowledge about our canine friend.
Please have a look around. We hope you find this web site not only helpful, but also enjoyable.

HOW TO USE THIS SITE

Browse Breeds...Often people have a good idea of at least one breed that may be represented in their dog. In that case, go to the "Browse Breeds" page and check the information for that breed. Sometimes size and personality can help identify a mystery dog. From there you can compare your dog with mixed breed dogs on this site by using the "See breed mixed with..." feature.
Browse Pictures...This feature is not ready yet, but soon it will be possible to look at thumbnails of pictures that are on this site. When you see one that looks like your dog, click on it to get more information.
Take Quiz...This feature is not ready yet, but someday it will be possible to input information about your dog's appearance and personality and let the computer "guess" what breed(s) he/she is. There are no guarantees that it will be accurate, but we hope that it will be fun and may introduce you to a possiblity you hadn't thought of yet. Until the quiz is developed, why not try this website?

SPECIAL NOTE FOR PUPPY OWNERS

If you have a puppy, the first thing to do is to estimate the weight of your dog when he/she is full grown. That way you can compare the adult weight of your dog to the mixes or purebreds that he/she might be. In order to do this, use the Weight Chart. Find your pup's age in the chart and pick the weight that comes closest. Look at the last line to estimate your dog's adult weight. By the way, make sure you know how old your puppy is. Sometimes the information given to new puppy owners is not correct. The age of a puppy can be determined accurately by looking at the teeth. Check the internet or ask your vet.
