Labrador Retriever

Thanks to their easygoing temperament, labs are one of the most popular family dogs in the US today. They also make good service dogs, since very little gets them upset. Labs are large dogs, typically weighing more than 80 lbs. Small females might weigh 50 lbs, while large males can top 100 lbs. Typical colors are cream to reddish (called "yellow" labs), brown (called "chocolate" labs) and black. Occasional "mismarkings" however can result in a black dog with tan spots (which can be mistaken for a lab/Rottweiler mix), or dark spots on an otherwise yellow lab. They need exercise and most enjoy a swim in the lake or even a dip in the wading pool, as you can see by Freddy's smile. As retrievers they can be trained to play "fetch" more easily than many breeds, since it comes naturally to them.

Labs are large dogs and so are the pups. A four month old lab pup can easily weigh 40 lbs. If your pup weighs much less than that, it is probably mixed with a medium or small breed dog.
