Rhodesian Ridgeback

The Rhodesian Ridgeback often has its picture taken from behind, looking at the camera from over its shoulder. The reason for that is the ridge of fur running down the spine that gives the Rhodesian Ridgeback half of its name. The other half of the name "Rhodesia" tells the origin of these dogs. Early Europeans who arrived in south Africa found that the Hottentots used dogs to help them hunt birds and large game as well as guard the settlements. These dogs were bred with European breeds to produce the Rhodesian Ridgeback we know today. Ridgies are gentle and affectionate, and hardly ever bark. They make good family dogs. Like many large, muscular breeds, it is wise to train them to be obedient when they are young. Correcting training mistakes is difficult when the doggy is over 70 lbs. Rhodesian Ridgebacks are fawn to brown, with drop ears and a long, strong tail.
