Shiba Inu

Shiba Inu means either "small dog" or "brushwood dog" in Japanese, and this ancient breed hunted small game and wild boar in the mountains of Japan for centuries. Keep this in mind if you have pets such as cats, ferrets, gerbils or birds and are thinking of getting a Shiba, for they still consider killing things to be their purpose in life. They make terrible lapdogs. Shibas are unusally intelligent and alert, and are not the type of dog who obeys because of a desire to please their human. They housetrain easily and don't mind cold in the least, with their thick double coat. However, they shed tremendously. Make sure they get enough exercise, and don't let them get bored, lest they find something destructive to occupy their minds with. As rewarding as it can be to be owned by a Shiba, they are not for everyone, as the guide to the Hellspawn Shiba makes clear. Shiba Inus are easy to recognize. The first time you see one you may be reminded of a fox, because of their thick coat, pointy, erect ears, and fluffy corkscrew tail. They are small, weighing about 20-30 lbs. Shibas are usually fox-red with white markings, but can also be black-and-tan.
