Schipperke
Schipperkes originally came from Belgium, that much is for certain. It is not clear what the name means, since the diminutive "ke" (meaning "small" in Flemish/low German) could have been added to a number of words. Small they are, rarely weighing more than 20 lbs. Schipperkes are hard to pin down, having been used as hunting dogs, herding dogs, and to rid homes of vermin. They also make good guard dogs, thanks to their courage and sharp bark. Schipperkes are attractive dogs, with erect ears, thick coats and curly, plume-like tails. They have strong builds, tapering from sturdy shoulders to small hips. American Schipperkes are jet black, while their cousins in Great Britain may be tan or cream colored.
