Shar Pei

Shar Pei means "sand skin" in Chinese, which refers both to the color and to the scratchy coat. The Shar Pei is an ancient dog, and supposedly helped guard livestock on farms and hunt boar in southern China. They are medium sized, weighing about 40 lbs. Shar Peis are supposed to have only solid or sable colors, possibly with saddle or points (markings on eyebrows), but since Shar Peis don't read the breed standard, they may also have spots or be painted. One thing is for sure, they can be recognized by their generous fold of skin, which make it easy for them to twist away from an adversary in a fight.
