Shih Tzu

Shih Tzu means "lion" in Chinese, and except for the size, the Shi Tzu has a lot in common with a lion. No doubt the regal bearing of today's Shi Tzus has something to do with them having been the favorite dogs of Chinese emperors until the beginning of the 20th century. Shih Tzus are high maintenance dogs as far as their coats are concerned, a daily face wash, and weekly grooming are expected. But they do not require you to go jogging or take them on long walks. You do not even have to take a Shih Tzu outside to do his/her "business". A litter box on the 56th floor will be acceptable. By the way, if you are considering getting a Shih Tzu, do not be taken in by the fallacy of an "imperial gene" being responsible for a dog being smaller than the standard size of 9-16 pounds. Anything less than this size carries the danger of the dog being sickly, as described in The Myth about Imperial or Tiny Teacup Shih Tzu. These dogs come in a wide variety of colors, including solid red, liver or black, gold with a black mask (like Blossom), or white with just about any color of ear tips, tail and sides.
