Yorkshire Terrier

If there is any single breed that would be the ideal dog for a hairdresser in training, it would have to be the Yorkie. Their hair is long and naturally silky, and can be brushed to a lovely sheen. It is so long that it has to be tied back (usually with a little bow) in order for the dog to be able to see, eat and drink without the hair getting in the way. Like all terriers, they are big dogs in a small dog's body. The maximum weight that Yorkies are supposed to have is 7 lbs, Sparky is a bit over the standard. Speaking of which, if you are thinking of getting a Yorkshire Terrier but think that a 10-lb dog is too big for you, get a hamster instead. The so-called "teacup" Yorkies, deliberately bred to a weight of less than 5 lbs are riddled with serious health problems. If you do get a Yorkie, be prepared for a dog who enjoys the sound of his/her own voice and who will rule your house. Probably the most well-known Yorkshire Terrier is the one who introduces a segment on the TV show "The Planet's Funniest Animals". Yorkies are not hard to recognize. Aside from the bow between the ears, they are "two-tone" with tan or gold around the face and black or "blue" on the back.
